Only yesterday I had a discussion at work about the direction I would take if I was choosing a UI strategy having seen Avalon in action as part of Microsoft Max application. The answer: Probably to give up on cross-platform UI development, put as much logic as possible into a cross-platform C++ services layer and then write custom UI layers for each OS. Avalon just looks too good now to avoid using for windows users. Any other approach will look ‘old-fashioned’. Microsoft’s new move to make this layer cross-platform is very smart… It means I can feel even better about developing for Avalon, knowing that I may be able to port other operating system versions using it also.

Two great businesses to be in now in my opinion:
- Software for video distribution: Everyone with a digital camera needs a way to distribute their creations.
- Software for cars: Synching your iTunes when you pull into the garage; downloading a map from a petrol station… “In the future, we won’t be purchasing automobiles, we’ll be subscribing to them.”

I really like this idea. Thinking of setting up on my street. Link.

My friend Morten has been thinking about something that obsesses me sometimes. Here is the question: How do I maximise getting tuff done overseas while minimising time away from the family. The diagram above is Morten’s thinking.
When working in Europe, I tend to spend the weekend with my family then leave Sydney Monday evening. This gets me to London for a full day’s work on Tuesday. Then I leave Friday night to get home Sunday morning for half a weekend.

Filed under Uncategorized | Comment (0)When they encounter DRM…
I am not sure what I think about this comment:
What all the DRM dreamers don’t want to admit is that 95% or more of the population hasn’t yet encountered DRM, and when they do, they aren’t going to like it. They’re going to scream and scream and scream and get mad as hell and not take it any more.
It is the intuitive prediction for I am sure even the hardest media company executive does not ‘enjoy’ using DRM as they once enjoyed throwing an LP onto a turntable or grabbing a CD from their collection and playing it in the car on the way to work. Its a royal pain and I have to believe that most people know it.
But then changes like this happen slowly, and consumers don’t notice as they happen. There’s another part of me that is confident that DRM will rule, and few will notice its coming.

I think there are many of use watching Google quite carefully, waiting for it to cross a line. The line approaches as they monitor click-throughs and gain the capability of watching how you use your computer more generally. If any other company had release a toolbar that did what the new Google toolbar does, it would have been immediately dubbed ‘spyware’.
